Obituary

Alfred Dietrick passed away peacefully Saturday, June 3, 2023 at age 101 with his family by his side. Alfred Dietrick was born on December 15, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of San Antonio and an Army Veteran of World War II.

Alfred grow up close to Ft. Sam Houston and attended Hawthorne Middle School and Fox Tech High School. Alfred was a member of the Fox Tech ROTC where he rose to the rank of Cadet Captain. His Brigade won numerous awards for their precision drills. Alfred joined the Army National Guard in 1940. A year later World War II erupted and Alfred was in training to be sent to fight Nazi Germany. However, before he left he had been dating and eventually married the love of his life Berta (Birdie) Tamez. They were married in 1942 before he left for North Africa as a member of the 36th Infantry Division, 141 Infantry Regiment, Company B.

Alfred endured many hardships as a combat platoon leader. The heaviest fighting he experienced was at the landing of Salerno, Italy. He was part of the first allied landing in Europe. He met heavy resistance from the enemy as his regiment continued to fight in Italy. As the war drew to a close Alfred was sent to France and finally Germany when the war ended.

After the war Alfred begin working at Kelly AFB in the engineering department. He retired there after 37 years of service. His love for design and art led Alfred to work for several architecture firms and home builders in residential and commercial design. He also worked for the University of Texas Health Science Center in their Construction and Design department. Later in life, he and his wife traveled the US and Europe. On a trip to Italy he was able to find an area where he had fought 40 years prior. This inspired him to become involved reuniting with other veterans of the 36th Infantry Division. To acknowledge the service of Veterans to his country Alfred worked with the San Antonio City Council to erect a monument honoring these Veterans. It is located on the corner of Alamo and Market Street. Alfred's work continued at the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas where he established an area in the Museum for the 36th Infantry Division.

Alfred enjoyed his time with other World War II veterans going on "Honor Flight Trips" to the WWII monument in Washington DC and to the WWII museum in New Orleans.
