Obituary

Alfonso M. Ortiz

December 29, 1940 – June 5, 2025

Alfonso Mora Ortiz, age 84, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on June 5, 2025. He was the second of eight children born to Jesús and Trinidad (Mora) Ortiz on December 29, 1940. He graduated from Fox Tech High School in 1960. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Reserves. Alfonso married Olga Herrera on October 21, 1962, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in San Antonio. Together they raised a family of five children.

Alfonso worked in a variety of places throughout his life: as a teenager, at a downtown furniture store; the Bluebonnet Hotel; the Alameda Theater and International Building as plant manager; and GPM Life Insurance Company in heating and AC services. On the side, he filled in as projectionist for various drive-in movie theaters in San Antonio. He enjoyed tinkering with things to learn how they worked and had a great gift to repair many things, be it boilers and AC units, projectors, cars, and more. He was a jack-of-all-trades.

Alfonso was active in his Catholic faith. As a boy, he sang in Latin in the church choir with his uncle. He enjoyed listening to music and loved to go dancing with his wife and their friends. He cherished celebrating birthdays and holidays with his family and was an avid fan of the San Antonio Spurs, the Dallas Cowboys, and western TV shows. He loved to barbecue and passed on this skill to his children. Following his retirement, he became chief home operator and was a devoted caretaker to his wife Olga in his final years. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and three sisters; and his youngest son, Adam.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Olga; his children, Alfonso (Joel), Cindy Heras (Jaime), Richard (Mary), and Elizabeth Ortiz (Gabriel); daughter-in-law, Courtney Ortiz; one brother and two sisters; seven grandchildren, Anthony Heras (Gabriela), Valerie Heras (Kayla), Richard Jacob Ortiz, Avery Gonzalez, Olivia Gonzalez, Everly Ortiz, and Ila Ortiz; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony Heras, Jr, and Aramis Heras.
