Alfonso De La Rosa, age 82, was surrounded by his family when he passed away peacefully on January 18, 2019, at his home which occupies countless memories of belting laughter and boundless love. He was a compassionate, charismatic, devoted, humorous, and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle to his cherished family.
Alfonso was born in the developing and fruitful town of Somerset, Texas on January 23, 1936. He served as an illustrious and proud member of the United States Army and Army Reserves for 10 years. He then continued as an industrious civil servant for Kelly Air Force Base for 32 years. Within a year of retirement from the civil service, he began working energetically on his "retirement" via the historic Menger and Crockett Hotels, first as a houseman and then as a loss prevention officer.
He should be remembered for his charm, sense of humor, his kindness and love for others. He was an unflagging and enthusiastic employee and coworker; an admirable family man whose heart belonged to those he loved. He was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed reading about history, suspense, and crime novels. He loved football (Cowboys and Longhorns), voiced his dislike of baseball and embraced the big blue skies and the great outdoors. Alfonso also loved animals both domestic and wild. He especially loved Sheriff, his loyal grand dog who joined him on his journey one day after his passing. One could often hear him singing the songs he loved. He adored his grandkids and could be heard around his house singing to them with a voice that would calm any child. Every child and grandchild were lulled to sleep with the Irish lullaby, "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral."
He was preceded in death by his father, Hilario De La Rosa and beloved grandson, Moses Lujan. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his wife and unfailing companion of 59 years, Carmen; daughters, Loretta (Eduardo), Cindy (Leroy), and Valerie (Allen); grandchildren, Hilario (Diana), Susan, Gregory, Angelica, Liliana, Jalena and Patricia Lujan; great-grandchildren, Marley and James; siblings, Edward (Sandra) and Janie; and nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
